Pipes and tubes for general use in industry and homes can be bought directly from pipe distributors and traders who stock different sizes and diameters of pipes. Steel pipes have been manufactured for over 150 years and pipe sizes used today in galvanized and PVC pipes were designed for steel pipes years ago. The numbering system – Sch 40, 80, 160 was set a long time ago and seems a bit odd, as Sch 40 is thicker than Sch 1120, but with the same outer diameter. While these pipe sizes have been based on the old sizes, there are other pipes like the gold flow cpvc size for heated water that uses sizes, internal and external, based on the old copper size standards. There are so many uses of pipes and tubes and they are manufactured in so many sizes, diameters, and qualities that it has become an indispensable part of daily life.
There are a wide range of applications that implement stainless steel pipes right from the commercial offices, to the domestic regions, to automotive industry. This material has been very useful and effective in many industries, and if it wasn’t for stainless steel, we definitely would have experienced a shortcoming in critical industrial processes. With every passing day, steel pipes are becoming an integral part of our daily lives because they are highly effective and can be accessed in different sizes and diameters.
There are basically three different types of pipe, and they differ in the way they were manufactured. There is seamless steel pipe that starts out as a solid round and after being heated almost to melting point, a hole is pierced through the center with a tool and creates the pipe. This is know as “Hot Finsh Seamless Pipe”. The second and most popular variety known as ERW or “Electric Resistance Welded” Pipe, starts out as a reel or cut-to-width coil of steel, known as “Skelp”. The Skelp is maneuvered through a series of rollers that make it round and then as the edges come together, an electric welder makes the longitudinal seam down the length of the pipe. The last and least used manufacturing method is “Buttweld” steel pipe. It is basically the same process as the ERW pipe, except after being rolled up, the edges are heated up and fused together to create the pipe. Larger O.D. steel pipe can be made by rolling and welding pieces of steel plate into cylinders or “Cans” and then welding them together end to end to make the pipe.
